Cannon Poweshot G10

The powershot G10 is the lastest successor of the G series, overtaking the G9 in function and ergonomic features. It looks almost identical to the G9 series, but several features allows it to top the G series.

The G10 comees with a 14.7 megapixel CCD sensor. Light weight yet powerful, it’s a good alternative to the SLR. Equipped with a wide angle 5 times optical zoom, the lens allows basic wide angle shots without any add on lenses.

G10 uses cannon Digic 4 image processor, which renders sharp quality images with good colour and tone. The G10 takes clear shots with minimal artifacts, although noise level is barely bearable by the time I”m shooting in ISO 800.

Design is good. Light weight but a sturdy hold which doesn’t make it feel “cheap” like a dummy camera. The buttons are well placed and switching exposure, ISO very intuitive. The auto focus functions does well for most simple shots and multi-focus and face detection is simple to use and churns out decent pictures.

Major dislike is that Auto white balance is a little off and tends to turn out too cool in daylight condition.

The video function is minimal and with maximum capture of 40 fps only.

With the price of a G10, I would personally spend a few hundred more and get a SLR. However, if you would like a compact, light weight camrea with enough power in it’s shots, or something you can carry around on a holiday without much fuss, the G10 proves to be the best companion.

Laptop Overtakes Desktops

A watershed event has occured in the technology industry. For the first time ever, more laptops or notebooks were shipped worldwide compared to desktop.
While many has long predicted that this day will come, it is still a milestone, indicating that the day has come where notebooks will soon overtake the role of the PC.

A majority of the 79 million notebook being shipped are netbooks.

There will soon come a day where our children will recognise the desktops were are using now the way we recognise the a 286 computer. :)

IE Security Flaw

A serious threat has been exposed to all users of internet explorer, the most popular browser in the world currently.

According to Trend Micro, as many as 10,000 sites have been compromised since last week to exploit the flaw.

Microsoft has currently only detected attacks against version 7 of internet explorer, but they warned that other version could also be vulnerable

The flaw allows people to be tricked into visiting websites coded with a malicious program which can then steal passwords from the victim’s computer.

Microsoft has said that it would consider releasing a emergency patch for the flaw.

LG Secrets

LG Secrets

LG was never a popular brand for mobile phones. But they are creating phones that are increasingly user friendly and stylish, yet maintaing an affordable price.

The LG secrets is the epitomy of what LG has hope to achieve in their phone for the past 5 years. The LG Secret KF750 is part of LG’s Black Label Series phone. It’s motto: “Style that Last”

Looks

Looks wise, Secrets is a solid and attractive phone. This is one phone which uses material previously only found in higher end cars. Tampered glass, leather and Carbon Fibre. The feel is solid enough, unlike some of the slide phones which feels like they’ll break anytime.

I’m typically skeptical of slide phones, as the sliding mechanism tend to get cranky over time. My LG set has been with me for over 6 months now and well, I still love the way it slides open each time.

Design

There is a four-way navigation pad that surrounds the center key which are touch-sensitive. It is keenly sensitive and the phone vibrates with stylish lighting of neon light to let you know when you have tap a key. A small problem I sometime encouter is the touch sensitive key being activated when it touches my face while holding the phone to my ear. This sometimes put my call on hold. I overcome this problem by putting the phone slightly away from my face.

Function

Secrets hold a 5 megapixel camera that is surprisingly good and clear. The auto focus function take a little long (about 1.5 to 2 secs) compared to the Sony Erricson phones. But picture quality wise, it’s as good as a C902.

While there is noo Xenon Flash, the LED flash is pleasantly bright enough for most shots and I’ve a good time with it. The night function works well, with the regret that the phone’s slim size means it cannot be place on a table top for a more steady shot.

Video taking is even more attractive at 120 frames per second. LG secrets comes with several editing tools and a movie maker. Most people would use their computers for these editing, but it can be fun at times to spontaneously make a slideshow complete with music on the train or on the bus.

Secrets comes with a weird touch screen function which is activated with the “touch media” function. Which means touch screen can only be used for Music, FM radio, Photos, Documents and Games. Most Exciting are the accelerometer-based game which works a little like a mini Wii on Hand phone. Just make sure your secrets don’t fly off your hands.

Others

LG secrets is sturdy to carry and can withstand small knocks with no problem. The battery life however last a mere 48 hours generally. If you use the accelerometer games or camera, then expect to charge it every night. Signal Strength is not fantastic with secrets and you need to consider seriously if the signal strength at your area is a problem. Otherwise, it should work well in most city areas.

One major complaint I have is the the phone then to lag a little (about 0.3- 0.5 secs), especially when the touch buttons are used. That being said, with so many function and great looks at a wonderful price, that’s something I can live happily with.
